The Travellers’ Bible follows Policies and Guidelines based around a copyleft license. Anyone can use, alter or contribute to the Travellers’ Bible so long as it is in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 License.
This may appear to be inconvenient; you will not be able to use content from websites which use the GNU Free Documentation License (such as Wikipedia). The GNU Free Documentation License is not used fbecause it has many onerous requirements. For example if printing more than 100 copies of the content, a copy of a changelog, must be included. This information would be unnecessary and impractical to include.
Content licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 License can, of course, be included in the Travellers Bible. Websites such as Wikitravel) can be used. Also material from can be included, so long as it states that it has been released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 License. To find other material released under this licence go to Creative Commons’ own media search page
Here are a couple of the policies and guidlines which are most important to us:
- Please cite your sources, where possible. They can take the form of links to other websites or a reference section at the bottom of the page. This is necessary because:
- It allows users to be sure that articles are accurate and means that their credibility can be checked
- It helps users find further information on the topic
See Wikipedia’s guide to citation for a more reasons to cite, and how to do it well.
- References take the following markup:
[^reference name^] for the reference, and [^#^] should be placed at the bottom of the page.
- You may copy, modify or redistribute our content so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others. This Principle is known as copyleft. You must however, quote this website as your source.
- You must respect the copyrights of all material when quoting on these pages. If copyright exists, permission may need to be sought before the content can be reproduced.
See Wikipedia’s guide copyrights for greater details on copyright, including image use and copyright laws for different countries.
- Please do not simply copy material from other sources of travel information (such as travel guides) unless it is actually appropriate to include direct quotation.
- Please maintain a neutral point of view; particularly when writing about the politics of a country. If you recognise an issue to be disputed, then please make it clear that there are different positions. If you come across some biassed information, please do not delete it (as such) but alter the page so that it includes both sides of the issue.
- If you disagree with another person, please do not discuss it on the normal page, but instead on the accompanying forum. Please be polite to other users however much you disagree with them.
- You should not include any misleading or ambiguous information. Neither should you include information which you are not certain about (unless absolutely necessary). If you judge that it would be very worthwhile to include such information, please make clear your uncertainty.
- Please do not include any information which might put other users at danger. If writing about risky activities (e.g. adventure sports, or even hitch-hiking) or risky areas, please accompany this with a warning of the risks involved.
- It is the policy of this website that all references to hitch-hiking must suggest that it is an activity with risks which, however unlikely, are potentially very serious. Hitch-hiking, due to its risks, should therefore not be recommended on this website; although hitch-hiking details can be included as a possible alternative form of transport.
- Disclaimer: The vast majority of our users will contribute in good faith, but even then some of their details may be wrong, or situations may change. Hotels do close, transport schedules change all the time and, of course, people make mistakes. So when using the content on this website, please consider that the information might be inaccurate, and do not take any risks based on it. In this way, you should understand that the owners and administrators of this website should in no way be held responsible for any information you might have got from here.
